Welcome to the beautiful City of Brockville on the St. Lawrence Seaway, one of the most attractive triathlon venues in Ontario.  Armagh Park and the Brockville Rowing Club is the site for this year's event.

We enjoyed another awesome event in 2007 with 600 participants in the various events, and 2008 promises more of the same. Especially with the addition of the new SwimCycle events, for those whose bodies don't enjoy running anymore.

We are also featuring the Super Sprint Triathlon for those experienced triathletes who want to do a short, fast one. So come on down to Brockville for the 2008 Thousand islands Triathlon, Duathlon & SwimCycle races.

There is a race and a distance for everyone

a special day in brockville

Sunday August 17, 2008 is "Thousand Islands Triathlon & Duathlon Day" in Brockville.  We want to thank the many hundreds of you who participate in the event each year and the many, many volunteers and sponsors for helping to make this all possible.

relays

Triathlon Relays are a fun feature of the Thousand Islands. Get a threesome (or a twosome) together for some fun and fitness!

try a tri challenge
It's back - and its for anyone who has always wanted to "Try a Tri" or those who don't want to be too competitive. We have shortened the run, just to take a little pressure off. BTW, mountain bikes and hybrid bikes are welcome in this event.

super sprint triathlon
This category and race will be separate from the Try A Tri Challenge. The Try A Tri is intended for the first timer, once a year, novice or recreational participant, while this race is geared to those who are a bit more serious but only want to go short and fast.

swimcycle
The SwimCycle consists of the swim and the cycle portion of the Olympic and Sprint Triathlons, in which SwimCycle participants start.  Those that enter these races will run from the cycle leg directly to the finish line from the T-Zone. We are offering limited age categories this year, and will add age categories as demand dictates.

championchip timing - by sportstats
We use ChampionChip Timing at all Somersault races.  This timing system requires that all participants wear a ChampionChip Bracelet on your ankle (Anklet) during the race.  This bracelet contains a computer chip that allows you to be timed.

You are responsible for obtaining your ChampionChip Bracelet on race morning from the timing people at the Sportstats Tent near the Finish Line.  Do this at least 30 minutes before your race - earlier is better!  Races will not be held up waiting for those who forgot their bracelet.

You must return your ChampionChip Bracelet immediately after you cross the finish line.  You are responsible for the cost if it is not returned - and it is expensive.

your results - age as of december 31, 2008
Your personal results will be posted within 20 minutes of your finish. Check the results as soon as you can,. If you have finished in the top 3 in your age, weight, or relay category, go immediately to the Awards Table to claim your Award Medal 'Add On'.

course descriptions

For a map of the event site and all race courses, please click here.

1500, 750 and 200M Triathlon Swims

The swim is in the St. Lawrence River.  Both swims begin at the Boat Ramp adjacent to the T-Zone with an open water start.  The swim course is a triangle of 750M.  The swimmers start heading South East from the dock, and make a turn to the West at 100M.  They swim West for 400 M and then turn North to swim the 250M to the exit ramp t the T-Zone.

The 1500M swimmers repeat this course and then exit at the ramp.  The ramp is a concrete bottomed boat ramp that allows participants to walk out of the water.  The T-Zone is 5M from the ramp.

Water temperature is usually 23 degrees Celsius in August.  Decisions on the number and order of the waves will be made on August 18 and communicated to the participants at the Race Kit Pick Up Tent.

2.3Km First Duathlon Run

The run begins at the Start/Finish Line adjacent to the T-Zone and Brockville City Hall. The run is an out and back course with the first and last 700 meters on a closed roadway (Water St.). Runners head West from the start along Water St. and turn left onto St. Paul St. which becomes Jessie St.  They turn left on Hartley St. and then left again on River St.  They then make the next left and retrace their steps back to the T-Zone on the same course.  The course is generally flat throughout.

20Km Cycle Course

The 20Km cycle is an out and back course which begins at the exit to the Transition Zone adjacent to the Brockville Rowing Club on Water St. East and Market St. East.  Cyclists exit the Transition Zone onto Water St. which is closed to all but local traffic during the event (first and last 500M). They head East on Water St. to Ford St. where they turn left and go up a short steep hill to King St.  They turn right onto King St. East (Highway 2), and proceed to the turn around point on Highway 2.  They return by the same route to the T-Zone.

40Km Cycle Course

The 40Km cyclists do the same first loop as the 20Km cyclists, and then they repeat the King St. (Highway 2) portion of the course.   At the end of the first loop, they turn at the corner of King St. and Ford St. and repeat the first loop from there, returning to the T-Zone at the end of the second loop.

Nature of the Cycle Course

The cycle is a very gently rolling course on a good quality paved highway with paved shoulders most of the way. The route is not closed to traffic except for the 1st and last 500M. There is a difficult section at the corners of Ford St., with King St. and Water St.  These are right hand 90 degree corners.  This section is controlled by marshals and police, but cyclists should proceed with caution and should not be on their aero bars.

5 & 10Km Runs
The Sprint Tri, Super Sprint Tri, Sprint Du, and Olympic Distance triathletes, all run the same course to the first turn around at 2.5Km.  At this point they  turn and retrace their route to the finish line.

Near the Finish Line, the Olympic triathletes turn around and double back, and they repeat this out and back course and then finish.

The run begins at the top of the rail tunnel adjacent to Brockville City Hall. (duathletes second run begins in the Transition Zone adjacent to the tunnel. Their first run follows the run course to the 1.2 kilometre turn around.) The run is an out and back course with the first and last 700 metres on a closed roadway (Water St.). Runners head West from the start along Water St. and turn left onto St. Paul St. to Jessie St. left on Annie St. to Hartley St. to River St. and into St. Lawrence park to the 2.5 kilometre turning point, and return.

The route is generally flat throughout except for 2 short steep hills in the Park, and an uphill grade on Hartley St. on the run out. Most of the run course is tree lined residential streets which provide good shade. The start and finish stretches run through the Brockville waterfront. Intersections and turns are supervised by marshals, and there are water stations at the turns.

Water Stations on the Run Courses

There are 4 water stations on the 5Km course and 7 water stations on the 10Km course.  They are located at 1.3Km, 2.5Km, 3.7Km, 6.3Km, 7.5Km, 8.7Km and the Finish Line.

general information

All entrants should become familiar with the our "General Information". There is  information in this section that is not on this event information page, so please click here and check it - even if you are familiar with the event.  It is a good idea to re-read event information the week before the event to be sure nothing has changed.

volunteers
If your kids, spouse, family members or friends are spectating why not volunteer them as officials/volunteers and let them have some fun too!  Email us ahead of time if you will help, so we can assign you - info@somersault.ca. For more information on our volunteer program, please go to http://www.somersault.ca/volunteers.htm.

Clubs, teams and non-profit organizations are invited to inquire about our volunteer donation program - a donation in return for a group of members volunteering for the day.

race info updates
We will email 3 weekly Thousand Islands Newsletters to participants with the latest updates prior to the race.  These newsletters are very important as they will identify  changes, answer your questions and recommend race day procedures that will make your event day a better one.

Please provide an accessible email address on your entry form if you wish to receive these Newsletters. You may want to use a personal email address rather than your work email, because many employers utilize filters that will not let the Newsletter through.
