"The Canadian Iron" 2005 was a roaring success and it is back to build on that success in 2006.  It is Ottawa's and Ontario's iron distance triathlon & duathlon. We invite you back or for the first time to participate in it, volunteer, or just watch this amazing race and all the support races that are part of this multi-sport day. More than 1000 racers enjoyed the 2005 event - more than 1200 are expected in 2006. It is a great way to finish off your summer multi-sport program.

And don't forget the Half Iron event which has grown dramatically over its 4 years. Join more than 500 others in this tough challenge in downtown Ottawa.  Or come on out and join hundreds of particpants in the Sprint Tri and the Try A Tri.

All races enjoy traffic free courses and are spectator friendly. The day culminates with post race meals and celebrations, where the stories and videos of the day are relived.  We hope you include "The Canadian" in your event 2006 plans.

your first tri?
It's a lot of fun, good exercise, and good company.  Click here to go to our beginner and novice site for assistance.

rules & regulations

The rules are there to make for a fair, safe, and enjoyable race. Remember it is your responsibility to know and adhere to the rules.  To go to the Rules and Regulations Site and review the Race Rules, click here.

wet suits are allowed

Wetsuits are allowed in this regardless of water temperature.  We anticipate that water temperature will be between 20-22 dgress celcius on race day.

ironman time limit

We have imposed a 16 hour time limit on the full iron distance tri and a 15 1/2 hour time limit on the iron distance du.  In addition, there will be a course closure on the swim leg at 2 hours, and after the cycle leg at 10 hours. Participants still on those courses at that time will be required to withdraw from the competition.

half ironman time limit
The time limit on the Half Ironman distance is the same as for the Ironman race - effectively, there isn't a time limit..

19 and over half ironman & iron age limit
In the half & iron distance races, entry is open only to those 19 years of age or older - except for the relay. We cannot allow anyone younger than 19 to compete. We recommend that younger participants compete in the Sprint Triathlon or the Try A Tri.

try a tri
This is a special one for the beginners and healthy people who have always wanted to "Try a Tri". The more fit and competitive are encouraged to enter the regular Triathlon or Duathlon races.  We recommend that participants in this category use Mountain Bikes or Hybrids, but road bikes are allowed.

teen try a tri and teen sprint

Yes, we invite young teenagers to come on out and tri one. We offer a 14-15 year age category in our Try A Tri and a 16-17 year age category in the Sprint Tri.

ChampionChip timing
We use ChampionChip Timing at all Somersault races. This timing system requires that all participants wear a ChampionChip Bracelet on their ankle during the race. This bracelet contains a computer chip that allows you to be timed.  No chip = no time.

You are responsible for obtaining your ChampionChip Bracelet on race morning from the Sportstats timing people at their tent near the Finish Line.  Do this at least 30 minutes before your race - earlier is better!  Races will not be held up waiting for those who forgot their bracelet.

You must return your ChampionChip Bracelet to Sportstats immediately after you cross the finish line.  You are responsible for the cost if it is not returned - and it is expensive.

your results - age as of December 31, 2006
Your personal results will be posted very soon after you finish the race.  Please check the results as soon as you can, to be sure they are accurate.  If  there are discrepancies, go to the Sportstats van near the Finish Line and provide them with the information you think is correct.  Results will only adjusted after race day, if it is our error.  Have the results people make changes before you leave the event site, or live with the results!

Results will be posted at www.somersault.ca within 24 hours of the race.
